It's already out, news everywhere. From Sun: Oracle to buy Sun, and from Oracle: Oracle and Sun.

At the end, Oracle is buying Sun, leaving IBM out in the dust.

What a move!

Oracle playing hard, Sun Inside

To be brief, Oracle was not so strong in the Open Source arena. All its mayor assets were on the traditional license business model (e.g. Oracle DB, BEA, People Soft, and Siebel). Now, with Sun, Oracle acquires a hardware division, Solaris operating system, Java, and MySQL.

The question now is how Oracle is going to play with OpenSolaris (against Linux), Java community, and MySQL.

As a business case, the previous MySQL acquisition (by Sun) is not fully mature, part of the original management is out of the company, working on future database forks, and the new database version sparks discussions all around.

From ArsTechica, a good review: "One area where the effects could be strongly felt is in the open source software community. Among Sun's most prized assets are some large-scale open source software projects that could see some major changes under their new ownership." ...http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/04/oracle-acquires-sun-ars-explores-the-impact-on-open-source.ars
