Open Source enabled a Paradigm Shift, e.g. Communities, new Markets... all the Web 2.0 stuff. However, we are chained to the old habits, and we do not really understand how Internet is changing. It's difficult to preview the evolution.
A good example from the article, BIND application supports a big part of Internet DNS (domain names). However, the author was not who profit from the development. The big companies running the service captured the market. Open Source, as a commodity, is moving the value higher on the software stack. The catch is to capture the value through Services. Even now, we think "Software as a Service" with a strong emphasis on the Software word. What if we say "Service as Software". It changes how we perceive the real provided Service. In this context, it’s weird to talk about features, bugs, kernel, multi-tenancy, cloud computing, SQL, Java, etc. We are missing the point. These concepts are only tools. In the "Service as Software" place is where we can begin to think how to provide value added services to these new markets. |
