Software as a Service
|
I've been updating the catalog against other directories. Checking some candidates, I arrived to the question, what is SaaS ? The answer may be very broad, as the world becomes online. Previously, I included candidates in the catalogue following an informal criteria. But now, I want to clearly define it.
A SaaS is an online Service, oriented to support business processes for companies (from small companies to enterprises). As the service is provided online, a website is built to provide the required software tools. Also, the SaaS may be applied by the real "Brick & Mortar" world.
Please, note, in this definition, the word Software is stated at a second level. It's not the key element. The Service is the key. All traditional software terms, like features, roadmap, patches, versions; and new field concepts, like multi-tenancy, must be prioriced under an umbrella as just tools to support the Service.
Also, note, the "Brick & Mortar" rule, the idea behind is that pure online business is not SaaS. It's something else, just Online Companies, not SaaS. Without this rule everything is going to be SaaS.
To provide the Service, we must talk about Customer Support, Service Management, Operations, Documentation, Training, E-Learning resources, and Certifications.
Following this definition, I'm ruling out of the catalogue: advertisement exchanges, Web 2.0 applications, Social applications or associated services, Webmails and Office services.
